The 5 main motivations for human behavior

“As humans, we are controlled by our own emotions. Our motivation is driven by five factors.”

Why do we do what we do today? Our current actions are motivated by what?

As humans, we are controlled by our own emotions. Our motivation is driven by five factors.

  1. The drive to acquire
  2. The drive to bond
  3. The drive to learn
  4. The drive to defend
  5. The drive to feel

What are these “drives” useful for?

These drives will help you shape and form your company. To understand the reason of these drives, you must understand the “Iron law of market”. The iron law of the market simply states: If your product doesn’t have value then your company is doomed. Then how does your product earn value? A product has value when people are willing to pay money to get that product. This is where the drives come in. Usually 9.9 out of 10 times, all of our human wants will fall into one of the 5 categories.

Here is a more in-depth analysis of the topics.

  1. The drive to acquire:

So what is the drive to acquire? It refers to the desire to acquire physical objects or intangibles, such as power, influence, or status. Companies that help achieve physical human goals are:

Retailers, Investment Brokerages, and Political Consulting Companies. Companies that promise to make the customer wealthy, richer, famous, etc. Intangible goals can be achieved by all of these means.

  1. The drive to bond:

Now what is the drive to bond? It is the desire to feel loved. Every human being wants it. Whether it’s chaste or romantic. Businesses that are built on this foundation include: Restaurants, Companies that sell make-up products and conferences all fall into this category.

  1. The drive to learn

This is the desire to satisfy our curiosity. Everyone wants to learn and a few companies promise to deliver just that. Companies that fulfill these wishes are academic programs, training workshops and book publishers.

  1. The drive to defend

The desire to protect ourselves, our loved ones and our property. Our instinct has always been to survive, defend and protect. Businesses that are built on this drive are home alarm systems, insurance services, martial arts training etc. Companies that promise to keep us safe, eliminate a problem or prevent unintended things from happening all fall into this category.

  1. The drive to feel

We are entitled to experience emotions in our lives. Happiness, excitement, surprise, entertainment, pleasure etc. Businesses built on these include restaurants, movies, games, sports events, theme parks etc.

Businesses that don’t satisfy any of these needs have no value. All of these wants are common to all, so if a business doesn’t satisfy at least one of them, then it’s a hobby rather than a business.

Summary:

5 factors motivate us to do what we do. This being the drive to acquire, bond, learn, defend and feel. This is what you should base your company upon. Your products should satisfy at least one of these factors for your customers. Otherwise your product has no value and your business just becomes a hobby.
